The powerful content ideation method I borrowed from product innovation

A 5-step process to creating unique content without endless hassle

Read time: 4 minutes

Starring at a blank screen searching for your next content idea isn’t fun, right?

I’ve been there many times before, and i’m sure you have too.

But there’s a proven framework I now use that unlocks endless creative content ideas

Today, I'm pulling back the curtain on this framework. It’s a funny one too because I initially dismissed it.

But now? I use it every single day.

Intrigued? You should be (well at least I hope so!🤣)

My Content Creation Struggle

First, let me be honest with you:

I know exactly how it feels when you’re stuck.

  • An overwhelming task list that never seems to end

  • The constant pressure to create unique, engaging content

  • That sinking feeling when you can't think of anything original to share

  • The paralyzing fear of letting your audience down

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

I was there too. Right in that frustrating spot where you're:

  • Trying to balance quality with consistency

  • Desperately seeking fresh angles

  • Fighting the dreaded writer's block

  • Watching others create endless content with ease

Then I discovered something that changed everything. The SCAMPER framework…

The SCAMPER Framework

SCAMPER isn't new.

In fact, it was originally developed for product innovation.

But here's the thing: it's absolutely perfect for content creation.

Let me show you why...

What is SCAMPER?

SCAMPER is an acronym that stands for:

  • Substitute

  • Combine

  • Adapt

  • Modify (or Magnify or Minify)

  • Put to another use

  • Eliminate

  • Rearrange

But knowing what it stands for isn't enough.

Let's dive deep into each element and see how it can enhance your content creation process...

1. Substitute

Substitute is all about taking what works and giving it a fresh twist. You do this by swapping in other concepts, angles or formats.

Here’s how you can substitute:

Using analogies and metaphors:

  • Instead of explaining a topic directly, compare it to something else.

  • Replace technical jargon with everyday examples

  • Draw parallels between your field and popular culture

Changing content formats:

  • Transform a how-I post into a story

  • Convert bullet points into a conversation

  • Switch from text to visuals

Personal stories and lessons:

  • Replace general high-level advice with personal experiences

  • Substitute theory with practical examples

  • Use your journey instead of abstract concepts

2. Combine

Combination is where the magic happens. It's about taking separate ideas and creating something entirely new.

Strategic combinations include:

Merging complementary ideas:

  • Blend productivity tips with mental health insights

  • Mix business strategy with personal development

  • Combine industry trends with historical lessons

Case study combinations:

  • Compare multiple success stories

  • Analyse contrasting approaches

  • Blend different industry perspectives

Multiple perspective:

  • Merge expert opinions with beginner insights

  • Combine client and provider viewpoints

  • Mix theoretical and practical approaches

3. Adapt

Adaptation is about evolution, not revolution. It's taking proven concepts and making them relevant for today.

Key adaptation strategies include:

Updating with fresh examples:

  • Modernise classic business principles

  • Apply traditional wisdom to current challenges

  • Update outdated statistics with current data

Modern angles on timeless ideas:

  • Reframe old concepts for new generations

  • Apply traditional principles to digital native problems

  • Connect historical success patterns to modern challenges

Leveraging established principles:

  • Build on fundamental theories

  • Adapt academic concepts for practical use

  • Transform complex ideas into accessible content

4. Modify, Magnify, Minify

This is about playing with scope and scale. It's finding the sweet spot between depth and accessibility.

Effective modification approaches include:

Expanding on ideas:

  • Deep dive into specific aspects

  • Explore underlying principles

  • Add layers of complexity gradually

Condensing complex topics:

  • Break down complicated concepts

  • Create bite-sized learning modules

  • Simplify without losing essence

Focused exploration into sub-topics:

  • Zoom in on specific elements

  • Examine niche applications

  • Highlight overlooked details

5. Put to Another Use

This is about getting maximum mileage from your ideas.

It's content recycling at its finest.

Strategic reuse methods include:

Creating follow-up content:

  • Build series from single posts

  • Expand on popular points

  • Address audience questions

Leveraging comments and feedback:

  • Turn discussions into new content

  • Address common questions

  • Explore controversial points

Cross-platform repurposing:

  • Adapt content for different platforms

  • Transform formats for various audiences

  • Optimise for different consumption habits

6. Eliminate

Sometimes, less is more. Elimination is about focusing on what matters most.

Examples of effective elimination strategies:

Removing fluff:

  • Cut unnecessary explanations

  • Remove redundant examples

  • Strip away jargon

Focusing on key points:

  • Highlight central messages

  • Emphasise core principles

  • Stick to essential elements

Streamlining content:

  • Focus on a single concepts

  • Maintain clarity through simplicity

7. Rearrange

Rearrangement can give familiar content new life. It's about finding fresh perspectives through organization.

Powerful rearrangement techniques include:

Strategic ordering:

  • Build tension through structure

  • Create logical flow paths

  • Organise ideas in a different way

Using cliffhangers:

  • Create curiosity gaps

  • Build anticipation

  • Maintain engagement

Alternative perspectives:

  • Reverse chronological order

  • Start from unexpected points

  • Challenge traditional sequences

Putting SCAMPER into Action

Knowing about the SCAMPER framework is one thing. But putting it into action is what matters most. Here’w how you can do that:

Choose your starting point:

  • Select an existing piece of content

  • Pick a topic you want to explore

  • Identify a problem you want to solve

Apply SCAMPER systematically:

  • Work through each element

  • Note down all ideas, even wild ones

  • Look for unexpected connections

Refine and execute:

  • Select the most promising ideas

  • Develop your chosen angle

  • Create your content

Moral of the Story:

Writer's block isn't a creative death sentence. It's simply a signal that you need a better framework.

SCAMPER isn't just a tool – it's your creative safety net.

When inspiration runs dry, this framework ensures you always have somewhere to turn.

Remember:

  • Every great idea has multiple angles

  • Content creation doesn't have to be a struggle

  • Frameworks aren't limiting – they're liberating

The next time you're stuck, don't panic.

Just pull out the SCAMPER framework and watch as your ideas start flowing.

Now go create something amazing!

Until next week,

Ryan
